AU:: Jongin is held hostage and he has his last phonecall with Kyungsoo.
Kai hears gunshots. The footsteps are approaching, labored breaths and rigid postures losing their purpose. The pigment of his coal shirt fails to blend in with the wall behind him.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are!"— The voice is nowhere near inviting. Jongin’s organs churns. He swallows the block in his throat.
You see, throughout the 23 minutes this invasion, Jongin’s brain mainly only has one thought—coming home to Kyungsoo.
Jongin, not only 4 hours ago ago, had promised Kyungsoo he would come home to Kyungsoo to "munch to our heart’s desire and cuddle when you get cold" as Jongin had said. Jongin didn’t tell Kyungsoo this, but he was going to snuggle his face into Kyungsoo’s neck and hold him a little bit tighter when slumber overtook Kyungsoo’s body— It was the vulnerable element that he wore while he was asleep that Jongin loved the most.
Jongin had imagined that, now, he’d be listening to white background noise from the television, smelling the scent of popcorn kernels, feeling his soulmate’s body blending into one with his. But he lives in a reality now where he hears gunshots and witnesses the death of innocent people, their bodies soon to be decayed.
“”Where oh where could you be?”
Jongin was the last victim. He has nearly accepted his fate; but he still has to do one thing.
As soon as Jongin hears his voice — oh gosh — he’s about to cry and die right on the spot. Their memories recall right before his eyes just with that one word. He loves him so much. This hurts him so much.
“I hear you!”
This disgusting voice is called not too far from him, his heart is racing. This revolting maniac is playing games with him but Jongin just wants to get one thing straight with the worried man on the other side of the line.
“Jongin, is everything okay?!”
He hears from the other line; the line with white background noise and warm popcorn kernels
"I’m sorry, I love you."
Jongin makes his farewell so simple, yet so meaningful. The footsteps approaching Jongin are making him physically sick.
Kyungsoo is fumbling, trying to grasp his words and trying to understand Jongin’s.
"Oh, I found you!"
—Kyungsoo wonders who’s voice this belongs to.
"I’m not coming home tonight."
Jongin’s lips tremble against the speaker of the phone as he whispers. And before Kyungsoo could even comprehend, one final gunshot is heard; the line goes dead …
